Pumpkin chai bread

When fall rolls in, I always find myself baking more than usual. There’s something about the scent of warm spices drifting through the kitchen that makes everything feel so comforting. This Pumpkin Chai Spiced Bread with a delicate black tea glaze is one of my favorite ways to bring the flavors of fall into my home.

If you’re looking for a twist on classic pumpkin bread, this recipe layers cozy chai spices with the natural sweetness of pumpkin. The glaze adds a subtle tea-infused flavor that feels both sophisticated and seasonal. It’s become one of my most-requested pumpkin recipes to make for friends and family... oh and it has some wonderful health benefits...

The Healthy Benefits of Pumpkin Bread

I like to think of this bread as comfort food with benefits. Here’s why:

  • Pumpkin is loaded with vitamin A and antioxidants that support skin and immune health
  • Chai spices like ginger and cinnamon are naturally anti-inflammatory and warming for digestion
  • Maple syrup gives sweetness without refined sugar spikes
  • Olive oil or coconut oil provide healthy fats that keep this bread moist while nourishing your skin and hair
  • Black tea glaze adds antioxidants from brewed tea, giving it a unique wellness twist

When I first came up with this recipe, I was looking for something that felt like a treat but didn’t leave me sluggish afterward. This bread checked all the boxes, delicious, cozy, and full of ingredients that actually make me feel good.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Pumpkin Chai Spiced Bread:

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2/3 cup maple syrup or coconut sugar
  • 1/3 cup olive oil or melted coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup plant-based milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Black Tea Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp strong brewed black tea (I've linked a great quality black loose leaf tea below)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

How to Make Pumpkin Chai Spiced Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and all the spices.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk pumpkin puree, maple syrup (or sugar), oil, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Combine: Gently fold dry ingredients into wet until just combined.
  5. Bake: Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 50–55 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before glazing.
  6. Make the glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, brewed tea, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bread.

I like to let the glaze drip down the sides of the loaf for that pretty, bakery-style look.

Tips for the Best Pumpkin Chai Spiced Bread

  • Don’t overmix the batter or your bread may turn out dense
  • Brew your tea strong for maximum flavor in the glaze
  • Add chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter for crunch and extra omega-3s
  • Double the recipe and freeze one loaf for later (it freezes beautifully!)

How to Serve and Store

  • For breakfast: Pair a slice with your morning coffee or chai
  • As dessert: Serve warm with a dollop of coconut whipped cream
  • Storage: Keeps at room temp for 3 days or in the fridge for up to a week
  • Freezer-friendly: Wrap slices individually for easy grab-and-go snacks

I always make two loaves in the fall because this one disappears fast in my house.
